Scoring....

The rules say hanging with a "ball"never says large ball… So we can hang with a Bucky ball… Right?

Plus I am 46 and been teaching for 7 years… I am honored to be considered a JUNIOR member

You CAN hang with a Buckyball, sure. But it isn’t worth any additional points. And, in fact, you would be better off putting it in a cylinder or the end zone for the points it’s worth there.

No, hanging with a big ball would only count!

You could low hang or high hang without a ball and still manage to get points

Scoring bucky balls in the stash is more points then hanging with them which is worthless…

From the Vex Toss Up game manual definitions, page 9:

So the scoring definition of “Hanging With A Ball” requires it to be a big ball to get the 10 bonus points.

Also, your member status depends purely upon the number of Vex Forum posts you have made. That is why the system considers you a Junior Member.

I believe it’s something like >25 posts makes you a “member,” and >100 posts makes you a “senior member.” With the current post-count/maturity of the forum, it could be fun to add other levels of membership. (Or, perhaps rename “Junior member” to “New member” to remove any stigma that is associated with the word “junior.”)

But I digress…

Actually a lot of people overlook the hanging part. It is also a major scoring way, if your robot can do it. Our team encountered a 25 pound robot with elevation lift and pneumatics claw designed solely for highhang with a large ball. In the autonomous they highhang with a large ball, which earns them 20 solid points and almost 100% 10 bonus points. During the driver control they just defend and manipulate large balls, and high hang for another twenty points. Therefore any alliance involving them scores at least 50 per match. That’s tough. Really tough.

30 points. They only count the high hang for the final score once, at the end of the match.

Yes, as Nathan said, it’s only 30 points. However, the fact that having a robot that only high hangs means that its ally is left to 1v2, which almost never turns out well for the individual. We have a few robots that only high hang, and I don’t believe they’ve even won a qualification match yet. Hanging is still just an addition and should not be a primary part of strategy. Only four stashed buckyballs will negate the points from hanging.

That is correct, but team 5203’s high hang robot is also a strong defense and pushbot with good large ball manipulation functions. They said that their base is so solid that they will never fall over. But during their match against us, after highhanging in autonomous their driver forgot to lower the lift and they fell on the bump… But still they made it into the semifinal by working with other two of their robots. For me defense robots are cool and supposedly good, but I still prefer to work with omni-functional attack bots like yours.

Oh sorry my mistake. We haven’t been dealing with a whole lot hanging with our robot, so we really didn’t bother to ask about the rule. But thank you for pointing it out.
