Second Year Problems

I am currently in my second year with implementing the VEX Robotics into my classroom. Last year was a trial year of just getting adjusted to the kits and learning how to build and program them. This year I ordered new motors, batteries, structural pieces and VEXnet keys for all four of my robotics kits.

My class this year just finished building their Protobot and we are trying to do a competition right now but we are having no success. Problems are the only things that are occurring.

Motors are dying, running slow, not strong enough to lift the arm. Batteries are constantly dying, even though they were fully charged. The biggest problems seem to be the connection status with the VEXNet controller and the Cortex. All the robots will only hold a connection for a few minutes at most. The VEXNet light is constantly flashing Green on the controller and Cortex. I have tethered them, switched keys and tried to reconfigure them. None of these solutions have worked.

It is too early in the year to be getting this frustrated with the kits so any suggestions or answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi dmason018,

I apologize about your frustration.
Putting all of this problems in one single sentence/paragraph, can make them seem overwhelming and impossible to fix; however, if you analyse each problem individually and think about the possible causes behind each problem, then they don’t seem that bad.

In order to assist you better and get to the root of such issues, please answer the following questions:

What kind of Motors did you order, 269 or 393?
If 393, are you on torque or speed setting?

Also what kind of batteries, 2000mAh or 3000mAh?

By motors dying, are they burning out and never working again?
or
Are they overheating and restoring after a cool-down period?

What kind of Motors are this, 269 or 393?
If 393, are you on torque or speed setting?

Whats the color for your “ROBOT” LED on the Cortex before the battery dies?
Whats the color for your “ROBOT” LED on the Cortex after the battery dies?

Whats the color for your “VEXnet” LED on the Cortex while on tether mode?
Whats the color for your “VEXnet” LED on the Cortex before you drop the VEXnet link?
Whats the color for your “VEXnet” LED on the Cortex after you drop the VEXnet link?

Do you lose connection while on tether mode as well?

VEXnet LED flashing green is good, it means you have a solid VEXnet link.
VEXnet LED flashing red means you lost your VEXnet link.

Please get back to me with your responses, hopefully we can narrow down the problem & fix any malfunctioning components.

Also please note all the helpful feedback & advise you are receiving from other VEX teams & mentors: https://vexforum.com/t/second-year-problems-response/24338/1

Regards.
