I believe there is a limit, just, as stated, 50 characters. (This means that the longest word in the English language, pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, is an acceptable name, as it is only 45 letters long, and contains no other characters.)
However, this is simple hearsay, and I have yet to do some more research into whether or not this is true.
