Single Acting Cylinders or Double Acting Cylinders?

Hi,

I was wondering which one will be better to purchase Single Acting Cylinders or Double Acting Cylinders for this years game?

Thanks,
Yogi

Double acting, more compact, plus can be converted to single acting.

It really depends on what you are using them for. Single acting pneumatics work well for a task that requires a force in a single direction, while double acting are better suited for a task that requires the ability to have two distinct positions for the part the pneumatics are being used for.

I would say double acting cylinders everytime. Here’s why.

With a single acting cylinder, you can have only one setup, powered out and spring return. Whereas with double acting cylinders are a lot more versatile. They can be:
Powered out and powered in;
Powered out and Rubber banded in;
Rubber banded out and powered in.
Also, they are not much more expensive than the single acting cylinders. Only three dollars difference. The double acting solenoids however, cost quite a bit more than the single action solenoid. You only need them if you plan on powering the cylinder out and in.

Planing to use it to launch balls mainly for this years game. Also how would you convert the double into single acting cylinder

to convert plug the unused solenoid port with a solenoid fitting with an orange plug in it, you can buy it separately on smc website.

Thanks everyone for the help. We will go with double acting cyclinder.

Power in and no power out
Power out and no power in

This is crucial in making pneumatic lift assist. But I assume you wouldn’t make pneumatic assisted lifts this year.
