speed

You need to increase your gear ratio. Power the big gear and the little gear will spin quickly. Also decrease as much friction as possible in your setup.

You need to increase your gear ratio. Power the big gear and the little gear will spin quickly. Also decrease as much friction as possible in your setup.

A few things you can adjust:

  1. Do you have bigger wheels? Bigger wheels will drive faster at the same rotation rate.
  2. Adjust the internal gearing of the motor for higher speed.
  3. Adjust the external gearing as noted above.
Things you have to watch out for:
  4. Make sure gears mesh well. Axles should be supported on both sides of the gear.
  5. Eliminate friction as well as possible, as noted above.
  6. This is huge!!! If you adjust too much for top speed, you’ll kill your acceleration. If you never reach your maximum speed, then having it that high is wasteful. Even if you do reach your maximum speed, if it takes too long to get there, the having it that high is still wasteful. If you want to build a multi-speed transmission, you can do that; otherwise just don’t go overboard on increasing the maximum speed.
