Just order some in the color you want. OK, not all colors are available. But more than you might think.

Well in theory I guess it could work but the issue is the stretching. A sheet of rubber bands that do not need to stretch could possibly work but seems like a lot of effort. My main fear of using paint on rubber bands is the cracking that would result from stretching the rubber bands.

Does the color of the rubber bands really matter? The bigger issue is that rubber non porous, so the paint won’t dry for a very long time, and when it does it will either rub off or flake and crack as others have predicted. If you really care about changing their color, I would suggest trying to dye them with something like RIT.
