This was just from my experience because I have done @Xenon27 ‘s method and the x banding strategy, and so far the x banding has worked much better, not in terms of overall force(as I had to use more bands when x banding, so you are right in this sense,) but in terms of the amount of bands broken. This may just be my tray, (it could be something sharp where they are hitting), but the x banding strategy does not break as many bands when flipping out/folding up as @Xenon27 ‘a method, and it gives enough force to flip it out. But yes, in terms of overall force the x banding strategy falls behind xenons method.
This is why you X band.
This sounds like it could benefit from having a sort of “kneecap” overwhich the bands would move giving them more leverage.
That is basically what my team uses. It also helps with the way in which the rubber bands are pulling
