Starting a VEXU Team

I am working on starting a VEXU Team at my college, and I would like some help finding grants and just general information about getting a team started.

If anyone would help me out with information about this, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Michael Riggs

Okay thank you for your advice. The college that I am attending now only has Skills USA but no VEX. So I went and pitched my idea of starting one there. Given my high school robotics resume, general interest, and the fact that Worlds is in the same state they said that the board will review it. The biggest problem, and really the only potential stopper in creating the team, is the financial aspect.

So just some quick questions about registration.

Is it the team registration one price for both bots? (College has 2 bots for an alliance on a single team) So if the price was $100 to register 1 team, would that be for the “team of 2 bots” or each bot that makes up the team of 2 bots.

Same goes with registration for events. VEX Worlds entry fee is $850 per team. So is this cost per robot, or per team of 2 robots?

I made a spreadsheet with a cost analysis of everything that I could possibly think of, but there were details like this in which I am unclear. So help on these specifics would be great.

Thanks

In terms if th costs listed above a team consists of several robots rather than having multiple teams. As in price is paid once for a team no matter how many robots. Team BNS for example has to pay 850 for worlds even if we have 27 robots.

So you can have multiple teams of 2 competing from the same college, and only pay the entry fee once.

For example alliance a and alliance b from the same school will only need to pay the $850 once if both qualified for worlds?

The entry fee pays for one “team”. In college, a “team” consists of two robots per match instead of one. One school could have multiple teams, each having their own robots and match schedules, but they must pay an additional $850.

What Tabor was referring to is that you can switch robots out between matches in college, so a single team could have multiple robots, but could still only use two in each match.

I found the task of getting funding troublesome, since there is often a long and arduous process of receiving official club status and funding. Last year I paid completely out of pocket to bypass this problem, but I know most people don’t have that luxury.

Okay, makes more sense now. Thanks

I’ve had to delete another post from this forum, for repeatedly reposting the content of an earlier deleted post.

What school? We started APEX with a student from WKU as well as 2 from Texas schools. If you have the means to build even a single robot you might consider joining us. We hope to have more team members and more robots soon. The only down side is we plan on competing in Texas, Oklahoma, and maybe in Louisiana and Arkansas if events pop up there so travel might be an issue for you. We will be relying a lot on Skype, Google drive, and other means of online collaboration as well.

Good luck in getting started if you go that route, it can certainly be done with the right people, and they do not all need to be at the same college or University.

The best advice I can give in allocating funding is to take advantage of the career fairs on campus since there are representatives from companies at your door step. Recruiters are generally receptive and would be interested as long as they see some value in it.

One thing that we do at Purdue to generate value is prepare a resume book of all of our members. By doing this sponsoring companies get direct access to students who are going above and beyond their normal coursework to challenge themselves in the Vex U competition. It also helps to have a corporate liaison who is solely in charge of talking to companies and following up with them.

If you are able to get a team going be sure to make the drive up north to us as we are hosting multiple competitions this year!
