Starting robotics for 9 year old

Hello,

My son wanted to join the robotics team. He didn’t make it .

He is sad about it and mostly cause he doesn’t understand why he didn’t make it .

I have asked the teacher about what he can improve to join next year. No response

So I am hoping someone here can help us out and can tell us what I need to get him for self study at home and any videos to watch or if there a place online he can learn.
He really like programming and coding and is reading books on it and he likes making video games too so I think this is a great hobby for him and I just want to help support him.

Very unfortunate that your son did not make the team. He sounds like he would be a perfect fit for robotics. There are tons of resources out there to help learn. The best way is getting hands on experience. I personally really enjoyed the building side when I did robotics. They way I learned was looking at other peoples robots on youtube and trying to incorporate some of those mechanism into my robots. I also watched countless videos that just kinda outlined different types of mechanism.
vex also has a bunch of videos on some of the basics of building like bar lifts, keeping shafts in place, gear ratios and all sort of stuff. if you type “vex Iq building basics” or similar searches some videos like this pop up. these are all good for learning some of the basics.

For programing the best way is to just get your hands on some basic sensors and drive base and learn how to use them. vex has this video playlist that has a lot of the basics on various sensors and ideas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuKettkbjqM&list=PLvvcc7S26YEiWk5P24qwHdM655Pit6dh5

There are lots of great resources on the web as well as here on vex forum. I wish your son the best of luck in his quest. Robotics is definitely one of the best things to happen to me. it really helped me explore my passion for problem solving and tinkering and turning it into an amazing learning tool.

Start him off on some of the Hexbug robotics kits. Most are rubber band powered, but there are some with motors. You can still find them at some Target and Michaels stores. You can also find them on Ebay, but you need to watch for a week so that you get the feeling for prices and shipping. I get kits on a regular basis.

If you live in Northern Delaware track me down, I have a robot lab full of these, I give you one when you stop over.

I’m sorry that your son did not make it. First things first, taking robotic like it is a class and “study for it” will just add an unnecessary layer of stress. If your son wants to practice this as a hobby once he’s done with chores, homework, etc. well, I couldn’t encourage that enough. There are plenty of tool to help him improve his robotics skills, such as even just reading through this forum and seeing if any questions are interesting to him, watching tutorials on YouTube, and talking with some friends who have done this before. Remember, if he is determined enough, he should easily be able to eat in next year. All the best to your sone

Seems like he will enjoy learning coding basics for VEX! There are plenty of tutorials on things like this on platforms such as YouTube or the forum you are on right now!
