Suggestion for Add On Kit

Hi. I am brand new to Vex, and so are my kids. We got a basic Clawbot kit . We now want to experiment by adding new elements like a stacker or a lifting system. I am wondering if I should buy this Vex Booster Kit https://store.robotmesh.com/vex-robotics/structure/vex-booster-kit . Those who have the experience, could you tell me if this will be a decent addition to the basic kit? I see that this kit comes with specific gears and hardware, Are these specific pieces used most frequently; or does this have a good sampling of everything?
Or is it better to buy the parts we need individually so we can pick and choose? I was thinking of buying this kit so we have quick access to things as we need.
Another question: I see that this kit has some channels with max length 25 holes. Do I need longer channels? I see some 35 hole channels. Thank you. -SG

You didn’t mention of you were classroom/hobbyist, or participating in competition, or if you had a cortex or V5 clawbot. If you’re going into competition, then you’ll generally want to be buying aluminum structure rather than steel (that is not to say a steel robot is not competitive, but it’s weight starts becoming a disadvantage.) for that reason, the add-on/booster kits are not good deals. Instead, most teams purchase parts as needed.

I would suggest, as a guide, look at the contents of the competition super kit (especially the “structure” tab and “motion” tab) as a guide for parts VEX V5 Competition Super Kit - VEX Robotics. The V5 competition kits are well thought out.

I never buy metal parts less than 35, you can cut them down as needed with a hacksaw.

Yes, I have read about Al vs steel parts. Can someone asuggest what basic pieces I may order ahead of time that are ubiquitous/ useful? They also sell a Aluminum kit.

Thanks.

We actually made a list of parts to answer the question of “I have a clawbot kit, what now” for a Girl Powered event at Google in California. I’ll send you that list by direct message.
