no it is not.
No modifications to electrical components were made.
Refer to other recent thread regarding this. Not legal.
Yeah but the modification is not permanent. I could easily put it back in the casing anytime I want. Refer to the turntable example.
I think the difference here is whether or not it is a vex supported mod.
Is the vex turntable a supported mod? Yes.
Is replacing the screw inserts of the motors a supported mod? Yes.
Is removing the casing of the sonar a supported mod? No.
Is changing out the type of motor mounts a supported mod? Also no
The game manual does not say that mounting the motor on the turntable was an exception. For example, it does say under R21 that you are allowed to change the planetary gear sets. If the game manual is the rulebook, then using a turntable is technically illegal.
That is not an unreasonable assertion. My reaction as an inspector would be “looks illegal - prove it’s not”. Since there is a high likelihood that it wouldn’t pass inspection, I’d recommend you do an official Q&A if that is something you are planning to do. Nothing anyone says here matters as much as what the person doing the actual inspection says…
The closest I have come to an “official” type answer on this would lead me to believe that removing the casing would violate the rule. Back in ITZ, @Karthik made a post indicating that removing the metal arm of the limit switch would be a prohibited modification, which seems comparable.
ETA - while the game manual doesn’t say this is an exception, the official Q&A linked in the other thread (Is it permitted to replace a V5 motor mount insert with a standoff once the insert has stripped? : Robot Events) from prior season does (and the official Q&A is an extension of the game manual). Of course those don’t carry over, but I don’t see why that answer would change if the question for it was asked again.
Uh, what? Since when can that arm not be removed? @zenix maybe wants to reconsider some things…
