Teaching Robotics during the pandemic

Hello everyone. We are planning to teach robotics using vexcode vr. Does anyone have a different approach during this difficult times?

That is also my plan. We are going to double up and teach VR to the Roboteers and VR to the code camp students.

We start at the end of September since our school open date is mid Sept

You are new, don’t know if you know there is a ton of great VEX lesson information out there.

Good luck!

thank you for the feedback. Yes i am kind of new. I started using vex last year and i need to speed up the virtual learning. The lessons you mention, are those the one included in the vex curriculum on their website?

Yep, they have done a great job. I know you are a VRC person, but it’s worth looking at the VEXIQ info, lots of great ideas there.

We’ve just published some new resources for teachers to help prepare for back to school this fall: covid.vex.com

Any feedback would be appreciated. We’ll be adding more in upcoming days and weeks.

Sharing on personal experience…

We (or rather, my senior members) did almost 3 months (twice a week) of online teaching of robotics to the juniors.

Sad to say, there is only so much that you can teach via online… designs, CAD, coding, etc…

At the end of 2 months, my senior members ran out of things that they can do online.

I told them to explore more online stuff… more coding, more CAD-ing, etc.

And the students told me this - “Sir… there is only so much you can talk about the design or coding, etc. End of the day, what is fun about robotics is coming together and build the robot and then try out your designs or code.”

I can’t fault them of this logic.
One good thing that came out of all these online sessions is that now all the members are familiar with the game manual (after multiple sessions of talking about designs… lol… )

Anyway, to cut the story short, around 2 months plus… we started packing parts in boxes and “smuggled” them out of the lab for the students to bring home and build their robots (and video conference each other while building).

Not saying it is not possible, but eventually you will run out of content and nothing beats trying out their PID code on the actual playing field.
