First what exactly do you mean? If you mean that you do not know what do to fix a problem then I would ask some engineers or go onto youtube and search your problem or things like it. On a team that are plenty of opportunities, you could be designing the mechanisms on the robot, program the robot, if you don’t want to work on the robot you can be a driver, write the engineering notebook, and scout out teams.

Go on youtube, look up vex robots from previous years. Then, try taking specific sub assemblies and creating your own version. Make sure to try to understand how each part functions, what the benefits for each part are, and go with it.
These are great practice for building techniques, understanding the mechanics of the robot, and help you get a good vex workflow.
Later, you can try modifying those assemblies to make them better. See what works, and what does not work. This way you will learn about tolerances, build quality, and weight saving techniques.
