The battery was at 3 bars but stopped working in a match

At our previous competition (last Saturday) our battery had 3 bars to start and stopped working in the middle of an elimination round (we ended up loosing because) and they called the battery dead but after the match it worked fine and the motors weren’t hot before the match (checked them before every match). I wanted to call it a system issue but didn’t want to argue with the ref because we had a warning for complaining and not getting along so I didn’t want to make it worse.
I am even more mad because we actually could have qualified for states at the tournament. plus it was the semi finals. I am trying to move past it but that was the second time it happened to us in general (first time in testing) I am trying to understand what I am doing wrong and what I can do differently.

The LEDs on the battery are an estimate of remaining capacity but do not tell you anything about the health of the battery. You can use the battery medic program to get more information, for example, perhaps you have a bad cell inside the battery. One way of loading battery medic is shown here.

You can also load battery medic from the VSCode VEX extension.

If the battery is more than a couple of years old, perhaps buy new ones.

Call it whatever you want, but it would never be justification for a match reply.

It sounds harsh, but if this happened before, even in testing… then it should have been dealt with beforehand. If you could not find the cause, that battery should have been flagged as ‘flaky’ and 1) kept fully charged and 2) used only in emergencies.

There’s not a lot of details given, but you could also be looking at a bad power cable. I’d carefully inspect the pins with a light and magnifying glass.
