Thinner Steel

We have some structural items, bars, plates and gussets that are 0.030” thick although they are described on www.vexrobotics.com (ref. <R6>) as 0.046” thick. Are these official product changes, quality control variations, or counterfeit?

Railrhodes,

Thanks for the question! After looking into this, we discovered a few things:

  1. The gusset 6-pack page incorrectly advertised the gussets as 0.046" thick. These gussets were designed and manufactured to be 0.032" thick. The webpage has since been updated.

  2. Due to manufacturing errors, the 5x15 steel plates included in some of the our kits is 0.032" thick, not 0.046" thick as advertised on the 5x15 2-pack webpage. However, the 5x15 steel plates purchased in 2-packs will always come as 0.046" thick.

Since the 0.032" plates are a result of manufacturing variances, they are allowed for use in the VEX Robotics Competition.

Other than the previously mentioned parts, what specific parts do you have that are under 0.046" thick?

Thanks,

Charlie

Thank you for the reply. I also have some (1) hole wide bars.
Thinner may be better (lighter) or worse (less strength) but motor mounting may be an issue.
If the brass insert in the motor is taller than the metal is thick, the screw will bottom out on the brass without securing the motor. A washer will only help if the hole on the washer is enlarged to accept the brass insert.
