Tips for States

Hi! I’m heading to states for the first time and am wondering if anyone has any tips and tricks to help my team do well at states!

Thanks,
Sejal

great job! i heard that you should aim for matches of 100 points - a lot, i know.

Practice your team interview skills. You might consider interviewing in front of an authority figure like your schools principal, and get feedback on how you did.

This is also my first year qualifying for states, but something that is important for all competitions is to talk to your alliance partner before the match. Good luck at states! :grinning:

to expand onto that, make sure that you know who’s saying what during the interview and making sure everyone gets their part in the interview is super important. One last thing, make sure to do skills, it’s could be more important that teamwork if you were in the correct situation.

I think the maximum score for a match is 92 points?
How many points total can you score on High Stakes? - VEX Forum
@Micahy321 calculated 82 points. Factoring in the Autonomous Bonus, the Autonomous Win Point, and the High Stake Bonus, we get 82+6+1+3 which is 92.

Isn’t this in the IQ category?

I’m pretty sure @Sejal_Jain is on a V5 team from their other posts.
They’ve also put a V5 topic into VEX IQ General Discussion before.
Quite confusing.
When you do the spacers at the beginning, does it matter the size because I’m looking for the 2 spacers and we don’t have enough of the spacers - VEX IQ General Discussion - VEX Forum
(Also it’s a Hero Bot with Robosource shoulder screws—not something you see every day (I assume/hope))

Yes, sorry I meant to put V5

Practice Driver Skills and teamwork matches. Be SURE that you have an effective autonomous, without it you can’t get some awards like think and excellence. Strategize with your alliance partner before your match, and practice lots for it. Practice your team interview, and be confident! Good luck!

Document everything in your notebook. EVERYTHING!

Also, introduce yourselves to the judge(s) at the interview and shake their hand. This is like a warm welcome and it might improve your score. (IDK IF IT ACTUALLY IMPROVES YOUR SCORE)

I dont think it will improve it, but it will make them look at yours to think of what award to give you if any at all.

first off, congrats and best of luck!!

my tips:

  • make sure you don’t miss any matches (States generally has less time between matches, at least in my experience)
  • talk to as many teams as you can, it’s a great chance to get your team number out there and meet other kids from your area…also useful for next season, since you’ll know people
  • have fun! lots of teams in my region do things like dressing up for States, and there’s a ton of other things you can do to make comp interesting. my team likes playing card games with other teams during elims, for example.

don’t stress about it. Make sure to refine your notebook and interviewing skills. Practice driving, if its your first year, make sure just to have fun!!!

Be extra kind to everybody. Judges, referees, and the event partner are usually more on edge. Our team mentioned what place we were in and what place our best friends were in and what could happen which would allow us to be paired up, but then the referee and event partner said we might earn a violation for 'asking another team to try to do less than their best."

Also, shaking hands at the end of the game and not screaming at ur alliance is great. Shows sportsmanship which is a requirement for excellence.
