Tips to initiate double zoning?

Any tips to initiate or encourage teams to double zone? We’ve built a pancake robot and we’d love to hear what entices teams to double zone, so we can de-score!

Maybe try ask your alliance to play HEAVY defense on the opponents to make them run away or try to get away. Thats what I do.

I’d advise, if you can get an opponent to double-zone, keep them double-zoning, because if they stop and you’re still under their goal, that’s a violation. At the tournaments our team has seen, most teams have big, bulky robots and tend to not care at all about double-zoning, so it might be easy to induce double-zoning if the other alliance doesn’t notice.

Same here! We have a pancake robot with claw and flywheel. So what we do, is we get our alliance to load continuously, encouraging both teams to go to one side to get the triballs back to the other side. They double-zone then. You’ve gotta be really careful though because as soon as they touch the black barrier, they are no longer double zoning. Have a teamate keep checking for that, because otherwise you will get dqed or you will be stuck under the goal until they stop double-zoning.

If you are under the goal when they stop double zoning, it is not a dq. It only becomes a dq if they are no longer double zoning and you descore a point.

Which can be an impossible situation if you’re under the goal and every route to leave the goal involves pushing a Triball out. Although the risk can be worth it, getting stuck might not be, especially if that one Triball gets stuck on a side bar (note to self: check the sizing for the sides of the goals, it is NOT the same as the front bar)

(note: rookie here, with a semi-pancake that we haven’t tested, so I’m probably wrong)

You will just end up being stuck under the goal, unable to score any points until they begin double zoning. If they don’t double zone for the rest of the match, you are stuck under the goal for the rest of the match (if you’re surrounded by triballs)

Read SG8 b. “Entering an opponent’s Goal at any other time is prohibited. This includes staying inside of an opponent’s Goal after they end their Double-Zone status.” If you stay, your presence in the goal could prevent the scoring of triballs.

I saw this happen recently and the bot sat there for most of the match. The other team kept pushing in triballs and was not going to double zone with them under there. The only way out was to descore triballs. Near the end of the match they drove out and descored a couple triballs. It wasn’t a DQ because even with the descores they lost the match.

So my advice if you get stuck under the net just get out. Teams are going to try to box you in with more triballs and they aren’t likely to double zone to let you out.

At this point in the season most teams are going to be aware that you have a short bot. They are less likely to double zone and more aware of where you are when they do it. In hundreds of matches I’ve ref’d or been a score keeper, I’ve only seen triballs successfully descored a handful of times. Only one time I can recall where the goal was wiped out late in the match and it changed the winner.

Practice trying to descore its difficult to push a full goal worth of triballs out, its harder than you think, they tend to jam together.

Thanks for the advice! Our team has gone to 1 competition so far this season and we expect others to adapt to our strategy. We managed to turn the tides in an elimination match and a qualifier match, fully sweeping a goal and half sweeping another, so as for now we think it’s worth it. Thanks for all the replies, cooking up a counter strategy to potential counter-strategies!

In our area, that isn’t a DQ, they just count it as 5 additional points against you for each descored triball

The score should be calculated as normal. Then for each descored triball 5 points should be deducted from the score. If that changes who wins the match then the team that did it gets dq. The recorded score doesn’t change. Unless a rule has specific violation notes this is how all match affecting violations should be handled.
