Traveling to Worlds (or CREATE US Open) with a VEX IQ Robot and Field via airplane. What are your best tips and tricks? What kind of carry-on should be use? I have the field in a large black/yellow crate from Home Depot, do airlines typically allow those large bins underneath the airplane? First time traveler with a robot. THANK YOU!
Bubble wrap and a smaller box for the bot. If you have gen 2, you just get a medium box for the parts. Gen 1, just transport the box like that. You could put all that in one big box and check it.
You need to make sure what ever crate you take latches securely, nobody is going to be happy looking for VEXIQ parts in the belly of the airplane. I’ve been a big fan of these for years. Robosource VEX Robot Case, Fully Assembled, Foam Padding - Robosource.net Just bubble wrap your assembled robot and put it inside.
I always suggest taking the minimum of parts with you. Parts in those 24 compartment tackle boxes, spare controller, etc. should fit inside the case with the robot. You can’t pack the battery packs, they need to carry on with you.
Not sure why you are taking a field unless you are supplying one for the event. There are practice fields. At most take the central tower and the 4 tiles needed for it to sit on.
Also looking for advice on flying with our robot. (First time traveling by plane with our robot!) can we pack the robot and carry it on? Does it have to be checked? Are batteries, cables, sensors all ok to fly with?
We’re trying to determine if we have to ship our robot by mail or if we can bring it in the plane.
- Batteries must come as a carry-on
- Double check the weight of your boxes (if it’s out of the limit check it on the curbside and tip the worker, they’ll be nice about it 9/10 times)
- Lots of foam
- DEPRESURISE PNEUMATICS
- some teams swear by taking out the wheel axils but we’ve never had them bend
