Ultrasonic range finders

I was wanting to put a couple of ultrasonic range finders on our robot, because I thought they would be useful during autonomous. However, one of the more experienced team members said that those don’t work during actual competitions due to the high noise level. I know the range finders do use sound to find distance, but do they really not work with high noise levels? Have any of you had any experience with them not working at noisy competitions? Thanks in advance.

Normal ambient sound has no effect on ultrasonic sensors. They only sense in the ultrasonic region; they don’t “hear” room noise at all.

I think it is more likely that his teammate just had a misconception.
