Use of fishing line for a pully mechanism

In rule R8 e. An unlimited amount of rope/string, no thicker than 1/4” (6.35 mm).
Does this include fishing line or no?

Use common sense

If its less than 1/4in thick then its legal.

In the absence of any additional qualifications like braided/twisted, your choice of monofilament should be legal.

But as someone who has used monofilament line in other projects, the spring nature of the line creating snarls is higher. So you might want to look at different strings to pick the best fit.

If the rule manual doesn’t explicitly disallow it, then it is probably legal :)

Just a reminder that even though there is unlimited use of string (under 1/4"!!), there are limits on the use of tape.

From my research, fishing lines are made of “nylon, fluorocarbon, or braided fibers”. Therefore they are not rope or string.

Sadly, you cannot use fishing lines in your robot.

Where is this in the rules manual? Am I missing something?

< R16d > directly states “Fusing/melting the end of legal nylon rope/string (see ) to prevent fraying is permitted,” and I don’t see anywhere else that disallows nylon string/rope.

I also can’t find anything related to the construction of the rope, only that as long as it is under 1/4in thick it is legal. Unless by stating “braided/twisted,” you are referring to cable/wire?

I would like to preface this by saying Q&As from past seasons are not applicable. However, this Q&A ( https://www.robotevents.com/V5RC/2022-2023/QA/1244 ) from the Spin Up season declares fishing line to be illegal only because it was difficult to see; I have quoted it below.

Thank you for your question! As a means to improve referees’ and scorekeepers’ ability to efficiently score the Endgame, decrease the resulting long Match cycles, and improve the overall safety of the Endgame, the November 1 Game Manual update included the following additions and changes to rule R7: R7 limits rope/string to a minimum size of 1/8” diameter and strongly recommends the use of Alliance-colored string or highly visible string that is periodically marked with the current Alliance color. With this revision to R7, fishing line is not acceptable for use in Spin Up.

Because there is no tile coverage expansion this season, one would assume that fishing line is legal because there is no longer a requirement for it to be greater than 1/8”. However, a new Q&A for the current season may still be warranted.

I think this includes a fishing line. Once you go to a competition however, I would ask the inspection officer or head ref to determine its legality just to confirm. I would have a backup in case it is not.
