Using intake to descore balls

Does anyone have any estimations on how far deep a standard TT intake would need to reach in the change up goals in order to descore a ball? I do not think we will have a definite answer until people start getting the actual game elements but does anyone have any good guesses so far?

ball radius plus distance from ball, so 4-5 inches

Plus distance from end of intake to point on intake that is the width of the ball radius. intakes with any sort of funneling will have to reach further.

So you are assuming that the intake would have to make contact with the center of the sphere in order to ensure proper pick up?

I would assume so because if you want a consistent robot, intaking it from the center of the sphere would be best.

That is what I would say too but was not certain.

Well unless your intakes are made with a lot of flex, most intakes will be about 6.3 inches wide in order to be the most efficient. This means that they wont make contact with the ball until then.

Okay thank you for the help

Dont forget to consider that there are polls on each side so if the intake is not designed right it can hit them.

If you are talking about the middle tower the distance between poles is something like 6.31”(according to field wall specs, no specs listed for middle tower) In other words, you aren’t fitting an intake between The ball and the goal

You certainly won’t be able to descore using the intake to suck the balls up. My guess would be that you would have to use something to poke it out?

that’s just for the middle tower, but yes. honestly you could probably use one of the intakes to push out the ball.

Yeah I was thinking that or maybe even an anti tip if that is more strategic. Like if you wanted to descore quickly in the middle tower without having to rotate then maybe just backing up and using an anti tip to poke the ball out. That may be an option if it comes down to the last few seconds of the game, I am not sure, just a thought.
