V5 Motor Deterioration

Our team has noticed that over the few months we have ran our robot that it has slowly gotten slower and the motors seem to be running at an apparent lower speed/ max torque. We are aware that the robot will get worse with time given wear but we were first wanting to rule out the motors being the cause of our problems.

Our robot is geared aggressively for skills and as such when we run it for a while it burns out. I was wondering whether there has been any noticed correlation between worsened motor performance and repeated burn outs on the motors. I am not talking about the reduced speed that motors get when they are hot, but instead worsened performance when they are cool because of repeated heavy use.

Thank you guys!

The motors should throttle themselves before they become damaged through heavy use.

I had a team that had that problem and it turned out to be parts that became more misaligned as things went on. You might want to check that an easy fix. Friction can build up across time.

Yeah we will definitely look into that but we were first wondering if anybody had experienced problems with the motors themselves getting worse over time.

I am with Foster on this - performance degradation over the season is not uncommon - had a team who was sure program was buggy, it turned out their frame was completely out of whack (that season when high impact collisions were common). Friction is not your friend in many cases.

Yeah we are not entirely sure what the issue is. We are not a new team and we are well aware of the inconsistencies it can cause. We just retuned our intakes and replaced the motors so we will see how that works next meeting. Thank you for responding!
