VEX CAD File Type

I have a quick question, why are the VEX CAD files in the .step format? A lot more 3d CAD and 3D modeling softwares use .stl files. I have to convert the CAD Files into .stl and it is just annoying. Can I get an answer?

Step files are really common in a lot of advanced modeling softwares, like Solidworks, Fusion 360, and Autocad; its basically a industry standard. As well, STL files can’t contain a lot of data in them due to them just modeling exterior geometry most of the time. So, you use Step files for more complicated meshes and to transfer the data in them. Can I ask, what are you using to CAD?

STLs are super inefficient and difficult to work with. STEP is an overall better format as it’s easier to use, and doesn’t use as much space.

I am using blender, I am not using a CAD software but Blender is a 3d modeling software which I find easy to use.

I didn’t know that… Well I am not the best CAD user. I am just trying this for the first year.

Also do you have any recommendations for CAD softwares with a small learning curve (also they have to be free).

Onshape is a really good software that doesn’t have that steep of a learning curve, it’s also free if you can verify if you are part of a school or college. I prefer Fusion 360 over Onshape, but both are good. Onshape is also web based, so you can access your data from basically anywhere.

I tried it… I hate it so much >:(

Onshape hater >:(

Anyways, why did you hate it? We can help you find your fit for CAD software.

Also, to answer your original question, .stl stores 3D geometries as a series of triangles, but only that. However .step files store both the physical geometry and other special properties, such as mate features, kinematics, surface color and properties, and more.

if you plan on doing anything engineering-related in the future, you’re gonna have to get used to it, onshape has one of the smallest learning curves next to inventor, and it only gets more fun the further you go!

What about Fusion 360? Its also free if you can verify that your a student.
