Hello Fourms As a class prodject that is vex iv been asgined to create a door opener, Im quite stuck on this and i have looked on youtube and could not find any videos on how people have done this do you guys (the fourms) Have any ideas or suggestions?

Well, what sort of door?

School Classroom Door Lockdown Devices: What Works and What Doesn't

We are in the inside so it it unlocked

What are your restrictions? How many motors? How many pneumatics? Do you have to just push it open or do you have to undo the latch and push and unlock the door? Does it have to be fixed? Can it be mounted to the wall? Can it be hand held? Can it be drivable like a robo?

No requirements we can use anything and it can be anything

To clarify, does this device have to abide by the fire code?

If not, I would consider creating a device that adjusts the “lever arm” at the top of the door, so that when a motor is powered, the door starts to open. I would use a secondary motor to “lock/unlock” the door in place, so that the door stays open. This second motor can disengage allowing the door to naturally close, but still prevent the door from fully closing, so that you don’t have to mess with the door knob.

This appears to be a classroom door? If so, there may be concerns regarding safety and/or security? Someone else mentioned fire door? There may also be restrictions regarding attaching to the door and/or wall?
Maybe consider something temporary (i.e. not attached) such as sliding under the door with wheels to move the door back and forth?

peoplet trying to come up with the most complicated ahh mechanism when lil bro could just use string

Its that door but it opens to a closet so it is not a fire hazard
but thanks for these ideas will update with more info

Well… my robotics lab door has a number lock on top of the usual door knob (which similar to the photo shown above) - you will need to turn both the door lever of the number lock and the usual door lever at the same time.

My students have actually made use of vex parts to do foot pedal to turn both door levers at the same time.

iv been doing vex comptions for 4 years this is the hardest thing

Sir, this is an engineering forum.

and engineers would pick the simpler solution :sparkles:

But if you want to do it with something other than just a string… Assuming the lock on the door doesn’t rely on “closing” the door handle mechanism, you can attach a mechanism to the door which holds the handle open (so it doesn’t have to be opened each time). As for actually opening the door you can attach a string (or tether of some sort) to the inside door handle, which is pulled by a motor winding the string around a sprocket (geared for torque), pulling the door toward it.
