Just wondering, if I refer somebody, what does that do for me?

Nothing, really. If you go to your profile, go to “Statistics”, and at the very bottom you will see “Refferals: X” (Right now mine says 0, I think it used to say 4/5.). As far as I know that’s all that happens. (Right now, at least. :P)
