The Strandbeest are a collection of giant walking machines by artist Theo Jansen. With a vision for creating herds of mechanical artificial lifeforms, Jansen developed some revolutionary linkages and leg mechanisms that fascinate artists and engineers alike. The IQ Strandbeest was inspired by the so-called “Jansen linkage” and is made entirely out of VEX IQ pieces (mostly structural beams and gears). It stays almost perfectly level while walking and is able to walk forwards, backwards, and turn, all using only two IQ motors.
