Heyo! Looking into treads for an intake, and I was told by someone that the Vex IQ treads tend to perform better, at least in terms of reliability (e.g., won’t fall off mid-game). I’ve refereed for High School State championships for the last few years, however, I’m new to actually building a robot for the games. Any thoughts on whether IQ tank tread is actually more reliable? Thanks in advance 
Vex IQ parts are not legal in Vex V5, so Vex IQ treads are illegal. I would personally not even use tank treads for an intake either.
Note: In general, yes IQ parts are not legal for VRC, however there are a few parts that are cross-listed (rubber shaft collars for example). Use VEX’s website product pages to determine if a part is legal.

I was a little confused about the chain in general. I think I got it now but if I’m still off just let me know!
Seems like the 3p chain is discontinued. Probably to be replaced by the 6p as it’s the same as IQ, less stuff to stock.
The 6p chain is the same for IQ and VRC, but the sprockets are different. The 6p chain can be used on both, but the 6p tread is only for iq.
The 9p chain is the “high strength” version and is only for VRC. If you want to use tread on your VRC bot, 9p is your only option.

I meant to mention it in my post, but I am VexU, which from what I understood allowed Vex IQ parts. I could be wrong though.
In terms of avoiding the tread intake, I’m interested in why you think it would be a bad idea. I should note we’ll be using the rubber flaps as well to grasp the part better, and angling the system a bit so that we should (hopefully) be able to pick up a triball easier. Not trying to challenge you by any means, but if there is a reason to avoid it I’ll definitely consider it when looking at different feeder designs 
I think flaps are absolutely an intake to consider especially if you are using side rollers. Because there are so many ways to manipulate triballs, it is in your best interest to try out the ones you think seem good! And yes, vexU people can use any parts legal in IQ or VRC.
