Vex Low Cost Identical Legal Parts Compilation

These are x2-2.5 less money than the ones vex sells. Thanks!

Found red pneumatic tubing, credit to VHS Crusaders, 100 feet for only $20:

What a deal!

I am pretty sure you can get tubing other places. I will look and let you know. (sorry in advanced for the mobile links.)

AAA Batteries
These should also last slightly longer than the VEX ones. And the VEX chargers work for these.

Alternative AAA Charger

Rechargeable 9V to save money

Zip ties 4"

Remember monoprice normally has codes for % off or free shipping.

Actually, in this ruling: https://vexforum.com/t/answered-usage-of-pneumatic-tubing-longer-than-5ft/26941/1
Karthik said that any length of tubing may be used.

Here is 100ft of tubing in almost every imaginable color: http://www.grainger.com/category/polyurethane-tubing/pipe-and-tubing/plumbing/ecatalog/N-aaa?bc=y#nav=%2Fcategory%2Fpolyurethane-tubing%2Fpipe-and-tubing%2Fplumbing%2Fecatalog%2FN-aaaZ1z0o06j%3Fredirect%3Dwater%2Bheater%2Belement

Thanks for all the links Android4Life! We’re almost done getting all the parts.

Here is a wiha tool screwdriver, a bit more expensive than the one’s vex sells, but 10x stronger so you get way more bang for your buck. 5/64" and 3/32" :

You can also get the classic L shaped wrenches for quite a bit cheaper. It’s made out of hardened chrome and is made by Wiha as well. We bought some of these, and they have never failed us.

As to the pneumatic tubing attributed to us, it works just as well as the stuff from VEX. However Eric J found this pneumatic tubing, but I don’t believe anyone has tried it yet So, if you need tubing, buy this stuff and tell us if it’s junk, or just a really sweet deal.

Has anyone considered making an Excel file so people could just add the name of the object, and a link to where to buy it?](http://www.amazon.com/ATP-Value-Tube-Plastic-Tubing-Natural/dp/B00E6BAT2I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422476505&sr=8-1&keywords=pneumatic+tubing+5%2F32+od)

Eventually we will add this all to the Botsnstuff.com wiki for safe keeping. We have already filled out the screws and standoffs.

Also a side note. I have tried to find alternative sources for the collars 5/32" ID for cheaper then VEX with no such luck. Likely to get them made any cheaper we would have to go to a source in China and get them custom made.

I ran into the same thing. It was especially bad with shaft collars being out of stock for so many weeks this past season. Alternative ones I found have a 1/64" bigger hole and cost a little more than Vex.

I did not try and source from China as shipping times and availability were of more importance.

Bumping this thread. We’re almost done with the compilation - or are we done?

Almost. I can’t find the polycarb supplier we have used.

AAA batteries when you buy them by the hundred:

Various bolt/nut suppliers:

No but does anyone know were I can get foam tiles for cheap than vex they don’t have to be black or grey I just need something cheaper than $250.

You can get foam tiles at Sams Club but they are not the same. So buyer beware.

I believe Vex uses SoftTiles. You can buy some there but you won’t get the red/blue tiles like Vex sells. You won’t get them much cheaper there either. But you can get a dinosaur on it!

Thank you Ill take a look next time we go to target or SAMs Club to see if they have any cheaper than vex.

If these are to be in a competition they should be the same color as the VEX tiles. A programmer may have gotten to brilliant idea to use a line tracker or light sensor to determine if the tile is grey or not and if it isn’t grey it wouldn’t work. It would be more likely for a programmer to do this looking for a red or blue tile (I’ve done this) but still possible that it will be done with the grey ones.

Also, more cheap, high capacity batteries! http://www.tmart.com/16Pcs-UltraFire-AAA-1.2V-1500mAh-Ni-MH-Rechargeable-Batteries_p298706.html

however these don’t seem to work with the VEX chargers.

tmart also sell multimeters which can be useful for testing batteries or even continuity on motor and sensor wires, some even have a battery load test.

I think this is a much cheaper alternative for the VEX Floor tiles. Although not shown in the picture, the flip side of the tiles is almost identical to VEX’s floor tiles. It isn’t as durable though.

$60 verses $250. That is great. For $250 you could have 76 additional tiles to replace the ones that do not last. Durability is suddenly not an issue.

Wow, I never looked at how cheap you can get foam tiles or that the VEX field tiles went up in price. Are they still the same as before?

At the current price, the kit from VEX works out to $5.75 per tile. The Harbor Freight ones work out to $2.50 a piece, or $90 for a full field, so it is a significant savings. I had looked at the HF ones in a store, and they seem thinner and flimsier than the VEX ones, but should work fine unless you are trying to combine them with old ones. After looking on eBay and Aliexpress, it seems that these are by far the cheapest you can get.

Note: The price calculation is at the “sale” price, but it is unlikely to find them at the normal price. You can also get them cheaper with the coupons they always have, and with 20% off it comes to $2 per tile, $72 for the field.

Do you know the actual thickness of the VEX floor tiles?

I just realized that it might have caused small differences for autonomous mode .

A bit over 1/2" thick according to this thread:
https://vexforum.com/t/foam-tiles/24265/1

Based on the 1" tolerance rule in the field, I doubt 0.05"-0.1" in height variation will make much difference. Just make sure that the tiles have the texture on only one side.
