Vex motors are slow

Good Morning Everyone,

I am helping my son and his partner with robot and the motor was spinning fast and all of sudden the motor started spinning slow. We didn’t make any change to programing. Anyone ever experienced this type of issue?

It could be due to the battery percentage of the brain. If the brain is low on battery, it will automatically make the motors slower.

Are the motors themselves slow or are they on the drivetrain

The motor is most likely hot and needs to cool down or the battery you are using is almost dead. If you switch the battery and let the motor sit for a few minutes it should return to the speed it was. If not there may be a problem with the motor internally.

It could be overheating. It could also be the battery dying overtime, or additional resistance building up.

I agree that it could be overheating . To fix this, you can reexamine your gear ratio, add more motors, or see if anything else could be causing it to overheat. Using the motor for an extended amount of time can also make it overheat, so try to take short breaks. There are very many other topics on the forum that discuss this, so I suggest you check them out.

Before we jump to conclusions:

  1. How long does the motor spin for before it becomes slow?
  2. What are the gear ratios, and if the gear ratio is geared for speed or torque?
  3. What subsystem on the robot is the motor applying power towards? Wheels? Lift arm?
