Does anyone know how to code pneumatics

No. Pneumatics are a magic devices that fall from the sky (hence the cost and constant stock issues). As a result of this, no human has any knowledge on how they work, let alone how to code them.

This is completely off topic, although I’m sure Dan and Bailey have expertise in this area, it’s inappropriate to ask in this thread. Spend some time searching the forum, there are numerous examples of how to do this.

I would go so far to say a new thread should be created for “possible community answers” and only allow posts here with questions, name, and team number.

Any chance VURC can get custom motor cartridges legalized again?

Why is it illegal for VURC students who design their own custom parts to get them manufactured by someone else? If the goal is to get students to learn CAM, is that worth the limit it puts on students without access to advanced tools? Do you feel that this limits what students are willing to design for the VURC, instead of encouraging them to learn new skills?

To add onto this, Vex U is primarily marketed as an engineering-centered competition (along with science, teamwork, creativity, leadership, and problem-solving). Manufacturing is important, but if it comes at the expense of more advanced engineering, is it worth it?

  1. Why the decision to make a different AWP for world qualifing events specifically? Why not just change the criteria for all events?

  2. Was the purpose of this so that we will see even higher and more complex autons at worlds?

  3. Were you hoping that teams would already be climbing at this point in the season, or is the season devoloping as you expected?

  4. Finally, will later game manual updates continue pushing for better, more advaced autons(requiring more than just good drivers), or push towards climbing becoming even more important?

Could you post a copy of engineering notebooks documenting the process of designing and iterating of the past games?

So we can all marvel at your engineering process or throw a rotten cores of cracked gears at you, if we suspect you of not allowing DRow on GDC to artificially limit our fun designing weird non-meta robots.

  1. Will the positive corners eventually be protected to allow more teams to leave mobile goals and try and climb?
  2. Do you see the positive corners becoming protected for longer in future manual updates.

Please read this in it’s entirety as I know it may be a controversial idea. I have posted this question in the VTOW forum post of the same title [HERE] if you want to discuss further with me, but let’s not dilute the original threads with these conversations.

Ever since the RECF has allowed Digital Engineering Notebooks (DENs), there has been a constant and large increase in the average page count of notebooks, especially across high performing teams. Although, as a 10 year competitor, I am very happy to see more teams putting effort into their ENs, I feel it has gotten out of hand.

With longer notebooks, and judges’ limited time, the important information can quickly be buried making these volunteers’ jobs harder. Additionally, teams need to learn how to share their ideas and methods in a concise way that will be expected in higher education, and into industry.

In 2018, 3/6 of the world design award winners had notebooks under 300 pages (3 non-public notebooks). The 2022 Excellence award winning team (81P) had a 318 page notebook (also non-public, but the members were my former teammates) followed by winning 2023 design with 355 pages. The 2023 Excellence award winning team (21417A) had 437 pages (at states) [HERE]. 515R’s notebook from 2023 which has inspired so many teams, and won 4 Sig Excel Awards was about 400 pages [HERE]. BLRS2’s VexU notebook from 2024, winning World’s Design and documenting 2 robots, was about 400 (submitted to Worlds @ 315 in January) [HERE]. I list these to show that many of the most competitive teams can show what appears to be the best notebooks in each season in less than 500 pages.

Last season, there were dozens of notebooks with over 700 pages. I can’t publicly share much more information than that, but if you talk to any JA from a Signature Event, or Regional Championship, I can almost guarantee they will tell you the same thing. It isn’t extreme anymore for a JA at a high caliber event with ~90 teams (such as a Sig or Regional Championship) to expect their EN judges to read 10,000 pages if their top notebooks are each around 500 pages. I have already seen notebooks that will be going to signature events in the near future with >350 pages … in SEPTEMBER with ~7 months of (I hope) great engineering practice to be documented for these students.

I threw out the page limit of 500 (excluding a code appendix) to some people today. I trust the RECF to dig into the data, and find an appropriate limit if they see fit. I also would propose a possible subset of the Usability & Completeness criteria to consider conciseness, or a consideration under the Notebook Format Criteria.

I understand that limiting the number of pages could have a few negative side effects such as limiting a team’s creativity in documentation, or causing teams to just make their font/writing smaller. As a 10 year competitor, and now a judge of 3 years (including as JA), I want to raise my concern of the size of the ENs we see from teams around the world.

I am sure the amazing JA’s at Worlds, and the members of the Competition Judging Committee can share their thoughts on this for seasons moving forward, but I wanted to raise the question now.

Does VEX plan to include match details (e.g. the number of top rings an alliance has and other information given in match results on tournament manager) in VEX Via as has been done in past seasons?

On a side note(Sorry for stacking posts) Do you ever plan on merging less cometitive regions to make them more competitive? Like merging some of oklahoma with texas and some with arkansas

Somewhat similar to this, I’ve thought about the idea of creating multi-region local events in areas near a regional border, at which award winners would each qualify to their own region’s championship, and the leftover spots would go to Skills at the State/Regional qualifying deadline (or from the scores at the event if this would work better, or be distributed via another system).

If a spot did not get allocated, it could be reserved for the next-best Skills score at the end of the season, or each region could treat the event as if they were the only region present for qualifying purposes. (Perhaps there could even be a way to reserve a certain number of spots for each region at the event and distribute the event’s qualifying spots based on this - or offer two sets of awards, though this would be more difficult for the judges, and many events might not have enough teams from a certain region for any of them to meet all the Excellence criteria at once, and thus might be unable to give out an Excellence Award specific to that region.)

For example, Pensacola, Florida and Mobile, Alabama are right next to each other. With a multi-region local event, teams from both states could compete at the same event, and each would receive spots for their own State/Regional Championship based on any awards they won and any Skills scores that put them in position to win a State/Regional Championship spot due to another team double-qualifying at the event.

Likewise, an event could be held in Sarasota (at the southern end of the North/Central Florida region) that allowed teams from both the Tampa Bay area just north of them (part of the North/Central Florida region) and the Naples/Fort Myers area just south of them (part of the South Florida region) to compete for spots at their own Regional Championship - when the state was all one region, teams from both of these areas would frequently go to these events, but after the split, the events in Sarasota often could not attract enough teams to make a full event. (There might not be as many teams in that area doing regular V5RC this year as there were back then, but if there were, they could return to hosting events without having to worry about being unable to attract teams further south than them.)

However, since this system has not yet been implemented (and maybe not even proposed), I assume there are probably other factors that would make it especially difficult.

I think the main issue would be teams from a strong region exploiting a relative advantage. Parity between regions has been increasing over time, but there remain disparities. By your description, Texas region 2 (Dallas) could qualify to their regional in TX R3, 4, or 6 and Oklahoma, Arkansas or Louisiana. I am in TX R4 and can assure you that only our top 2-3 teams would be competitive with the top 10+ teams in R2. The rank 8 team in R2 that is tired of just missing out could go to 5 of the regions above and likely increase their odds of success.

A secondary issue might be differences in region funding/support. Indiana has fantastic support for competitive robotics, which I love. Keeping that separate from neighbors might be considered an issue of fairness.

As a practical matter from an EP in TXR4… enacting your proposal in my area would result in a flood of Houston and Dallas/FW teams coming to R4 to try and snag spots at their regional. This would make it harder for our local teams to attend events due to size limits. We often already get 2-3 teams from those regions our local events – attending just for practice. Expanding that pressure is not something I would want.
