VEX V5 Brain Screen Not Working

Problem: Nothing on the brain screen is visible, it is pitch black.

What we know:

  • Brain is actively connected to motors and radio (solid red light).

  • Brain is actively connected to Controller (controller can access and run user programs).

  • Brain touchscreen works, we were able to run a user program solely from blindly touching the brain screen.

What we’ve tried:

  • Switched out battery and battery cable multiple times, ensuring that both have no visible damage.

  • Restarting the brain countless times using the power button and unplugging the battery cable. This was tried with and without motors and other periphery connected.

  • Re-downloading firmware from the V5 Firmware Utility 1.3.0 MAC app multiple times, however we are unable to determine that the firmware utility worked as wouldn’t a full reset that delete user programs?

What we will try:

  • Call VEX support if this forum post can’t solve it.

We would greatly appreciate any and all help! This brain is one of our newer and best brains. Let me know if you need any more information.

I assume it used to work.

When did it stop working ? during a firmware update ? After being dropped ? something else ?

Try shining a flashlight on it and see if you can see anything, it sounds like the backlight has failed.

The brain was fully functional and bought sometime in 2022.

We were running a user program, stopped the user program, and turned off the brain by holding the Controller’s power button. The brain wasn’t in a firmware update or dropped.

We tried shining a flashlight on it a bit before I made my original post, since I saw you saying the backlight issue in another thread, but could see nothing. We tried it again this morning a bit before I’m writing this post and it didn’t work.

The brain is in its same state this morning as it was last night.

Well, it sounds like the screen or some screen related hardware has died.

Is there anything else for our team to do? Or is our last hope to call VEX support and see if we could get some sort of return or partial refund so our team isn’t out nearly $400 over something not in our control?
