This year we’re thinking about building a flywheel for our bot. I know that last year lots of teams made custom inserts to use in place of the gearbox to achive the maximum rpms they could from the motor. Is this legal this year? We were going to do it, but when searching the rulebook we came across section R14. The D portion of this rule really got us worried. Is it illegal to use inserts, or is it just modifying gearboxes that’s illegal? We can just use a high gear ratio if needed, but we’d prefer an insert.

I think the wording is very clear. Part C says that you can only replace with an official gear cartridge. Part D also says this in its first sentence. Unless you are planning on using the red, green, or blue gear cartridges, it’s probably illegal.
First, rules from last year do not matter for this year, but last year’s “creativity” led to changes for this year.

Yes it is illegal to use a “custom” cart. The only allowed ones are the red, green, and blue carts in their unmodified state.
I don’t see why you would even need a insert. If you were looking to do a flywheel on a stick setup most teams just use a blue (600 rpm motor) with a 84 to 12 tooth gear ratio.
Without an insert, the motors run at about 3600 rpm (correct me if I’m wrong), which is a good flywheel speed and since there’s no gears, less friction

Ok, granted, this is probably not the best week to make the complaint.

I think the review system is unlikely to change anytime soon. It has been discussed more than once internally and the general feeling is that we don’t want to go back to a system where moderators have lots of cleaning up after topics/posts have been made.
