VEX Via usage

How do you capture results from TM? I’ve been pulling results from VexDB (praise be to @nallen01), but the results aren’t recent enough.

You really ought to use a dedicated WiFi network for TM mobile…

In my experience VexDB updates extremely close to when VEX Via updates. However, the tournament has to be uploading match results and rankings in realtime for it to work.

@evan10s Yes, I’ve been in contact with Mr. Allen. He tells me that VexDB updates every 4 minutes, or about the length of a match, from setup to upload. I was just wondering if you were hooking into like the display feed or something

I WAS!

I have a 5ghz router that I was using for the tablets, and they and the computer were the only devices on it. Once everyone got in the room it stopped working. The tablets were within 10 feet of the router.

So, I can’t tell you exactly why it stopped working, but when everyone came in the room it stopped. I think that every device that has WiFi on just adds a little to the “noise,” and too much in a small space messed it up. It’s hard to diagnose, and when the tournament has to start you just go to paper.

I see…

In your router settings, try setting the channel to ‘Auto’ next time - it might help.

We have started using some great networking equipment one of our students on 81Y made for us.

We pull in wifi from the school via a nice chap mono price 300 Mbps Wireless-N AP Router, Range Extender. Then we hard wire the rest of the TM computers at the event. It gives us the bridge to the outside world and makes a nice subnet for all the TM related computers run on. Everyone goes out to robotevents and vex via app to get their data.

@ethan_matlack is the creator of this on 81Y. I am encouraging him to bring the setup to worlds to show.

Division in a box because you always lose at least one of these pieces:

Networking gear for more advanced wifi management and tunneling. But that is another discussion…

Will do, thanks!

When using VEX Via, it works and updates just fine during Qualification matches, but does not update during elimination matches. It will finally update when the event partner finalizes his results and uploads them. I am using an android phone and it has done this consistently since the first of the year. Has anyone else noticed this problem, I am not sure if it is just my phone or a general symptom.

We have had this same problem all year. I don;t know why it is doing it this year. Maybe the rewrite did not handle it properly? I thought it was the way we set the alliances or how we did not always use the elimination drag and drop to schedule fields.

But no, no eliminations were published for us all season.

I’ve seen this issue at multiple completely different events throughout the year. If I remember correctly, RobotEvents hasn’t updated live to show elimination match data either, even when scores were posted live just fine during qualifying matches.

My guess is that VEX Via (or rather the servers behind it) checks RobotEvents to see what data is publicly visible. Invisible data doesn’t get shown on VEX Via, even when the data is available. My reason for this guess is that, at an event with a slow internet connection, I saw elimination matches listed in VEX Via after refreshing, but eliminations disappeared entirely after I refreshed again to see a score.

I really hope this issue is resolved by the time Worlds comes around.

This is the first I’ve heard of this being a problem, we’ll look into it. Please, if you see anything wrong, especially if you’ve been seeing it for a while, send an email to [email protected] so we can investigate.

Can confirm that I have seen this issue too at our (NZ) events.

It was pointed out that RE had this issue on 7th Feb, and Dave asked if people could verify whether it happened in Via too ([VexDB] Updating is currently on hold - VRC - VEX Forum). I don’t know if anyone ever verified it after that though.

Are you still seeing it? After a discussion with Dave, he said he found a problem that was introduced in January and was fixed in the February 20 release.

Hi Mike,
I still had this problem at the Heartland Regional on the 25th of February and the Belton, MO tournament, which was held March 18th. Sorry I didn’t think to let you know sooner. Our next tournament will be next week at the US Open, I can try to let you know if I have any problems. I will be busy as my team is competing and I am a head referee so time will be limited. If you want me to text, pm me your number and I will text you.

It appears that event did not use the latest version of TM at the time and instead used the January version, and we see evidence that it exhibited that problem. Not much we can do there; the EP should have been running the latest software and that would have taken care of it.

If you’re talking about this event, then it appears to have worked properly. Our server saves every copy of the match data that is uploaded throughout the event. In the case of the offending events that were previously reported, it is obvious that the live-uploaded data did not have the elims. The Belton event, however, did have the proper elim data included as the elims progressed. All the match data (quals and elims) is stored together in a single unit on the server and delivered that way to RobotEvents and VEX via, so it’s pretty unlikely that this wouldn’t have been included in VEX via or RobotEvents. Did I find the wrong event, or is it possible you’re mistaken on that one?

I can confirm it happend at these two sets of events because I helped run them and looked for this exact issue. We downloaded the latest TM right before the event.

The data for all 4 of these events have timestamped match uploads correctly showing the elims as they progressed. These uploads are passed on without processing to RobotEvents and VEX via.

I’ll check with the RobotEvents admins as I believe they have timestamped data on their side too. At this point I can’t find any indication of anything that did not work properly with these events.

Except publish to the phone…

Thanks. Could it be that the eliminations don’t have a schedule to match against?

I don’t think that can be said conclusively. Your phone may have been having trouble getting to the VEX via server, or could have been blocked by an overzealous proxy or served improperly-cached data by a misbehaving one, for example.

We’ll keep a close eye on the events that are happening this weekend to see if we observe anything out of the ordinary. I’m not sure what else we can do at this point.
