VEXos 2.2.1 Update on Gen 1 Brain/Controller pairing

So, we all know that the Gen 1 brain and controller are paired using the tether cable. Apparently that changed with the VEXos 2.2.1 update. During our annual robotics camp, I started updating components as I usually do and there was the 2.2.1 update for the Gen 1 brains. After updating, I had students telling me they couldn’t get their controller to pair. I tried multiple times with the tether cable, with no luck. I looked through the menu, and at the very bottom is a “Pair Controller” option that I didn’t remember seeing. So, out of a “well, nothing else is working” mindset, I selected the Pair Controller option and used the same button combination as used to pair a Gen 2 controller and brain (hold L up and L down, then double click the power button and wait). It worked! So, if you are having the same issue, try this.

pairing with tether cable still works, I just checked.

The “Pair Controller” menu item was added to allow a generation 2 controller to be used (as there is no tether port on a generation 2 controller).

A generation 1 controller can use same button combination as a generation 2 to allow it to be paired with a generation 2 brain.
