<SG3> A Robot may not expand beyond a volume of 18 inches wide by 18 inches long by 18 inches
tall at any point during the Match, with the exception of the allowance listed in <SG10>.
<SG10> Robots may expand beyond their normal maximum perimeter of 18” by 18” only while
completely within the volume of the Climbing Zone. Robots may expand above the 18” height limit
while completely within the volume of the Climbing Zone and with less than thirty seconds (0:30) left
in the Match.
I expect to see some design convergence with an I taking and shooting mechanism, but it’s the elevation bonus that I think will lead to a variance in design. I find it especially interesting, seeing as I plan on competing in VEX U next year. It’s also nice to see something that could use programming during driver control to gain an advantage (potentially using the ultrasonic sensors to align and get a proper distance to shoot from), as well as something that’s just different from lift and score.
From what I’m seeing, you can expand horizontally inside the climbing zone at any time, and you can expand vertically in the zone during the last 30 seconds.
So i can understand the limit on horizontal expansion to limit wallbots from totally blocking off the goal areas. But I dont really like the banning of lifts outside of the climbing area. It feels like its limiting our designs. Unless im reading the rules wrong…
