I keep seeing people online talk about different types of robots/features, but no one says anything about what they actually are. Do you guys know what they are talking about?
Without you giving specific examples, yes.
Generally there are established names for them.
A quick search on YouTube or the VEX forum will help you.
Let me guess, drivetrains, hood/hook, intake, 6 motor drive, you’re not being specific on what they talking about, so I can’t explain properly .
Like what the types of mechs are. Like what is the lady brown, what about the doinker mech, etc?
Mech = mechanism for a certain thing
Lady Brown is a wall stake mech that grabs rings from the intake to be flipped over onto a wall stake
Doinker is a generally pneumatic powered bar with a bit at the end to grab mobile goals to move or flip them or to shift rings around
Mogo is short for mobile goal mech, usually refers to a clamp
Welcome to the world of VEX where teams create jargon that Judges will have difficulty following as the names really do not relate to mechanism that may exist in real life. A team may call a scissor lift a “Double X” because it might look like a bunch of X stacked together.
I am not sure what the best answer is, but I do think we can do better at attempting to use descriptive language where possible.
I would recommend teams investigate examples of linkages and mechanisms - CMU has a site of examples:
If others have good examples sites, this might be a good topic to post it to.
(Pertaining to wall stake scoring)
Lady brown mechanism (or called “lb”): Hard to explain. Here are some videos though:

Fish Mech: Similar to lady brown, but much simpler, but reliant on momentum and doesn’t do too well around defense.

Redirect: Intake reverses at one point so the ring will slide into a “cage”, where it can then be scored. Used to be the meta until Lady Brown came out, but quite large and difficult to tune the “catch point”

Doinker mech: Horizontal expansion used to tip stakes, clear rings out of the corners, basically an extra arm.

Mogo is short for Mobile goal, usually “mogo mech” or “mogo clamp” refers to what the team uses to hold mobile goals.
