I’ve seen a lot of people say holecount this and that but what does it mean?
It means to find a video or photo of someone else bot and replicate it hole for hole. The term comes from the holes on the pieces of metal.
Look at a robot, and copy it hole for hole.
Yor are making an identical copy of a robot if it is holecounted. Don’t do this, improve on the oraginal design.
Yes there is nothing wrong with gaining ideas or inspiration from others but always try to be original and build and improve on others designs if you wish to take inspiration from others.
Also hole counting is instant death for design awards
Unless the judges are uniformed…
Well if you don’t notebook it its not very honest and if someone finds out it might get you in trouble
That is true. TC is an option too…
“Holecount,” as a noun, refers to an exact copy of someone else’s robot. As a verb, it refers to the act of copying someone else’s work exactly and with the intention to do so.
“Holecount” is a derogatory term referencing a team in question and thier original designing capabilities. a Holecounted robot is usually not as good as the original because holecounters often don’t completely understand the robot and make small errors.
Holecounting a robot is considered a shortcut to have a competitive robot for a team’s own benefit without going through the full design process of thier own. It is looked down upon heavily.
Technically, clawbots are holecounts of the provided build instructions. They are the most common example of season-spanning holecounts. Within seasons, there are also holecounted designs. Last year, thanks to 574C’s helpful and respected tutorial, many teams had the same holecounted punhcer. This year, 448X’s Goofy RI3D is being holecounted, but this one is being improved on still. Oftentimes, there are many holecounts throughout the season.
The important thing to remember is that there are only so many possible ways to accomplish something in Vex. Independently developed or conceptually inspired designs aren’t holecounts, even if they look the same. Holecounts connotatively refer to those who utilize the aforementioned shortcuts. It’s important to remember that similar robots are not just holecounts of one another, and tens can have their own independent (or influenced) design process without hoecounting.
I usually take holecounting to mean copying a robot, but only by observing photos of it. For example, if 448x released a step by step tutorial on how to build their robot I would not consider it holecounting, but if someone watched their reveal for days to make a replica then that’s holecounting.
