What materials can be used as non-functional decorations?

So I am working on a custom license plate design and was wondering if there is any restrictions on non-functional decoration materials. And if any materials you be restricted what rule would they be against from.

For hypothetical reasons would glass be allowed. I personally would not want to use glass but there should be nothing against it and if there is what rule would it be called out on.

Thanks :ok_hand:

The only official source for “restrictions” would be the game manual and the official Q&A. Looking at the game manual, we see that R13 (the allowance for nonfunctional decorations) does not provide a list of illegal materials; however rule G3 (use common sense) always applies. Since, for example R10a bans shattering plastics like plexiglass, common sense would say that shattering materials, like glass, would not meet the G3 test.

S1 and R4 also come to mind:

<S1> Be safe out there. If at any time the Robot operation or Team actions are deemed unsafe or have damaged any Field Elements or Game Objects, the offending Teams may be Disabled and/or Disqual- ified at the discretion of the Head Referee. The Robot will require re-inspection before it may take the field again.

I think most inspectors (myself included) would rule that using a material like glass is inherently unsafe, and therefore not allowed, given that robots are likely to make robust contact with each other and/or the field during a match.

I pick glass as an example because of its inherent safety issues. What makes a material unsafe what makes it safe? For glass safety would be cuts and breaking. But what about other materials?

common sense.
if a decoration has the potential to cause harm any more than legal vex components, I would deem it unsafe.

Getting at the real question I am making a custom license plate. I wanted to light it up with acrylic.

In it says
“a. Shattering plastic, such as PMMA (also called Plexiglass, Acrylic, or Perspex), is prohibited”

So it seems like it would not be allowed but I think that since it would be a non-functional decoration in a safe environment it might be legal.

I might make a Q&A about this but I wanted some opinions first

here’s a safe choice:

make your custom plates, but bring normal backups in case the ref deems your plates unsafe.

Well I think according to the rules you have to bring normal ones anyways but do you think I should ask a Q&A?

Custom 3D printed License plates are okay, I’m pretty sure. I’m not sure about the Q&A.

The game manual uses 3d printed plates as an example
