What other materials can we use for vex v5 over under ? Can I use store-bought rubber bands and plastic ones?

We are the first time join Vex V5 and need some help with non-Vex items such as rubber bands, mica plastic (for wings and structure to climb over the black fence in the middle of the yard) and cable tie. Thanks for answering my question :3
