For the first time in my career, I have downtime with actual parts at my disposal. What should my team build to practice and improve our build quality?
Make a base and try experimenting with a PID, pure pursuit…
you can experiment with different types of drives, different types of lifts and other mechanisms such as intakes rollers passive expansion systems complex ratchet systems and other fancy motor sharing systems

Saw a team with a 3 wheel triangular base drive. It was awesome. Pushing power was good, turns were fast, allowed strafing. Like mecanum but FAST.
build a robot for the next game without knowing what it is, try to see how applicable you can make it.

I saw a similar triangular drive from a team in South Dakota. They were a top team that had not lost an in state competition all year. They revealed this new base for state and finished near dead last. I was impressed with their creativity but underwhelmed by there performance.
You should make a basic drive train to create an odometry program.

kiwi drive? also it could have been fast just because it was geared up also now that u mention it a 6motor kiwi drive would be kinda crazy (2motors on each wheel)
Make a base, any type of base, and make it as fast as you can. Not only is it fun to make a speedbot, it lets you see what gear ratio and motor cartridge combinations work best without burning out to fast
Challenge yourself. Get your coach to make a wheel that has like, 10 different challenges. Get 3 different ones, one drivetrain, one lift, and something else. Make a robot that can do all of these things well.
Don’t know what that is. The chassis looked like a triangle. The wheels were straight 200 rpm and each were at a point of the triangle.

I would get a feel for every different drive train you can. Learn as much as you can about drive trains and even try experimenting with transmissions. The games change every year, and you’re going to need new mechanisms and new systems for the new game. The one thing you always know you are going to need is a drive train. So, if you can get really familiar with all the drive train possibilities, it’ll make it a lot easier to make an OP drive train choice early on in the season. You might even find that a drive train you built during the “off season” for experimental purposes suits your design perfectly.
Build a DR4B, and mount a claw on it. Something goofy, difficult, but with mostly no size specifications. Get a feel for the design technique.
OR, like my team is doing, play (basically) rocket league. We took the corner goals from Tower Takeover and mashed them together in a rectangular center goal. We are going to use a ball from Change Up. The plan is to play with four robots and no auton. We haven’t decided on how many balls to use, or if ball possession will be illegal. So once we sort all the used parts we bought, we will make some ridiculous bots to play with until the VRC game reveal.
Try to build one claw or some system that can score as many of the previous game elements as possible.
