So at our recent tournament in Kimball, MN, there were teams that were acting very unsportsmanlike to a team in our program. They were taunting them, cheering, and yelling (which was very annoying.) So what do you do when this happens?
DO:
What the team did, was remain calm and don’t reply. Do NOT argue with them.
DONT:
Argue with them, fight them, destroy their robot, or be scared.
You have to be strong when people try to take you down. Often (like in this case) it’s just because you’re better than them.
Thank you for reading.
Please be kind and sportsmanlike, no matter what happens.
Anyway, obviously I was not at the event, and I wouldn’t have any context to the situation.
But generally, if the team is really uncomfortable with how some of the other teams are treating them, I’d think that the mentor should approach the mentor/teacher of the other teams to talk about it.
Some times, some kids might just see it as harmless banter, without realising it can actually be offensive to some others. For these cases, most prob they just need an adult to remind them.
One man’s food is another man’s poison.
Remember that for a lot of vex competitors (especially in middle school), it’s really just a game and winning and losing are near meaningless. For the people just there to have fun, some banter might be their way of doing so (the same way you would in soccer or basketball).
Be sportsmanlike, but more importantly try not to take yourself too seriously.
The refs and coaches at the event did not like us either. The refs were overheard accusing us of cheating, and the refs didn’t give a penalty to the teams that were jeering when they stopped us from hanging.
Ok so I’m one of the members in team 61170c the one who you are talking about we were very happy and so we’re about 100 other people we were not trying to be rude just happy to get into finals.in Danny we trust
Hi guys! Yea, you should always be nice to other teams. I would personally have gone to their coach and talked to he/ she about it. But what they did was also a really good option. P.S. You guys have an amazing organization so they really should have enough respect, (cuz I’m sure you guys destroy all of them. All of the teams that went to lambeau in your organization performed amazing btw.) But yeah, they should not have been taunting you guys and the team did the right thing by not having a reaction. Good luck with those bullies! DESTROY THEM IN MATCHES!
We’ve had a similar situation to you where refs have bias. A ref at a recent competition is the coach of a team that REALLY dislikes us simply because we’ve beat them 8 times. She didn’t call a robot being entirely inside of our goal (we were not double zoned) although she tried calling us for not letting them out because we were scoring with them in the goal and even threatened to us because we were playing heavy defense and offense. After watching match videos, she simply watched our robot for just about all of our matches instead of the rest of the field, leading to many violations going unnoticed.
Another organizations coach is an EP and has contacted our EEM directly regarding her bias and filing a report for not watching the whole field and simply not calling violations on teams against us.
as a member of 61170g I can confirm as a witness that they were just cheering them on and not trying to be rude also they were also really excited as they were the first ones to beat you for the entire season (however if you had a problem with the cheering you should tell the head ref during the match that it was distracting your driver)
oh and i don’t think there are any rules about not being able to cheer maybe in the drivers box but in the stands you can cheer all you want.
(BTW we hope u guys do good in state and at Princeton)
and best of luck to all teams
hey bro its not bullying to be unbelievably happy for winning against the number one team in the state(also the team we are referring to were very rude at the tech tournament and made multiple team members cry and we were happy to make 61170B (tiger beta) that was sad at the tech tournament happy) other than that best of luck to all Mankato teams in future events
Don’t cross the line - hijacking the OP’s thread and sending multiple messages in the thread in such a short span of time will give people the impression that you are ganging up against OP (regardless of the actual intention).
I hope it is not, and I don’t think this is true. But if it is, then maybe it should trigger some reflections on your part too?
But end of the day, talk to your team’s mentor/teacher. Let them handle it.
