What would you do, what would you like to see if teams can't come to Worlds

So lets start a little spin thread, One team can’t come due to things they can’t control, that creates an opportunity for you. How do you connect - remember them - have them live through your robot. What showing to you make? Team shirts, things on the robot, add their number to yours, pit displays with pictures of their robots. Get their robots and drive them for them? What’s your reachout plan.

And what do you think of next year, the team you picked is on the cusp of going, you are on the cusp of going, do you hand over your spot to them since you “played” for them?.

I’m after trying for YOU to come up with meaningful gestures for this year, and what your plan would be for next year. Can you be as kind in giving back a slot as you were in taking a slot.

Karma is a big thing, What’s your plan / idea. Not expecting fast posts here, put a reflection by teams that say China team 1234 was blocked, we did this … this … this … this … and sent a 50Kg of swaq their way. In 2021 if they are on the list to go, and RECF is short slots we will

  1. give them our slot
  2. Rock paper Lizard, Spok our slot
  3. Go an we will be the coach for he team.

Planning this and role playing both sides gives you empathy for both sides. How do you present that to honor the team that can’t come.

@Foster Excellent thread that you have started!

Maybe I will give the perspective from one of those teams that might need to give up our spot(s).
And interestingly, just recently I had a discussion/chat with some of my students about what should we do if we can’t go to worlds…

So here are some of the ideas (from teams that might not be able to go worlds):

  1. do an earlier than usual thorough reveal of our worlds robots.
Our worlds robots are 90% done… and trust me - we have lots of new “gadgets” that make us very hopeful of winning worlds this year.
So hopefully the earlier than usual release will give some teams enough time to implement some of our ideas for worlds.

  2. do a video recording of our skills run (with record breaking scores) and upload it to YouTube and forum

  3. find someone worthy to adopt our robots and run it for us in worlds.

Edit: added the word “worthy” :stuck_out_tongue:

I kinda want the recf to let teams who couldnt go to worlds submit their robot pics and team numbers and at the awards ceremony they would have a sort of memorial for all the teams who qualified but couldnt go.

Unfortunately,Our team(8982 7671 7995) will give up participating in this year’s World Championships.

At the same time, I wish you all good results.

Speaking practically, I really hope a tribute is given to the teams that cant attend. The parade of nations is rather empty without representatives from places such as China and Singapore, and I really hope REC does something to make up for them not being present. Especially given that this is the last year it will be in Louisville.

You will be missed! Post pictures of your robot, so you can get the appropriate “Wow, I wish I had the build skills to make that!” comments

We are not a professional vex team.We are a science and technology community under the government.
Our annual learning goals usually change according to my mood.
I think the robot type of this year’s vex project is too similar.
So,We haven’t studied vex in depth this season.
Our team is mainly studying the information science competition this year.
About vex, I personally made a pros graphic simulator based on lvgl this year

I wish you like it.

Teams won’t really be assigned a team that they are replacing, so I think having something like that to honor their season would be basically impossible without a massive-scale externally organized assignment thing, and even then, it would probably be voluntary. I hope the RECF has something to honor the teams that couldn’t go, maybe a slideshow of team pics and stuff.

That’s so sad to hear! You guys did so amazing last year, my pit was near yours at worlds.
Worlds really won’t be the same with so many great teams not coming. Will talk to my team about paying China a tribute.

I’m sorry to hear that. I was a volunteer last year in the Innovate division and y’all were amazing. We’ll miss not having you all compete this year. :slightly_frowning_face:

If you know a team who you’ve met at Worlds who qualified but wasn’t able to go, you could honor that team. (Like maybe if you were their alliance partner last year.)

You could also put a list of the numbers/names of all the teams who qualified but couldn’t go. Maybe someone could put out an official (or unofficial) list. (I might try to do that myself sometime, if I can find out which spots qualified easily.)

I’d like to see a massive reveal video/montage of all the teams that won’t be able to attend. Put together a bunch or clips showcasing all the robots that can’t compete so that at least the teams get some recognition for all they’ve worked for this season.

If it is decided that VEX Worlds 2020 will be held without ability for the teams from China and other Asian countries to attend, I would like to add an idea, that I hope RECF may consider worth discussing.

If the virus situation in the mainland China stabilizes to the point where travel from neighboring countries is permitted again, then could there be a virtual VEX World division run inside China with teams from other Asian countries attending?

Then they could present their best end of the season robots on the field, compete against each other for performance and judged division awards and compete against the rest of the world teams for skills. Only the round robin playoffs would be off limit.

If this is to happen, the division plays could be broadcast at the big screen at VEX Worlds and division award winners recognized on screen for the televised ceremony.

I hope this possibility could be kindly considered, because many Asian teams worked very hard all season long to present their robots at VEX Worlds and we hope that we could overcome the unfortune of the virus soon.

Thank you.

This is a really great idea. I think the logistics of it would be hard, a venue that big isn’t something you can get with a few weeks notice. There are also huge travel bans in that part of the world, so travel would be hard for those teams.

I gave your post a heart for really thinking outside the box. Nice job!

It is with great reluctance and sadness that it is confirmed there will not be any Singapore teams for worlds this year.

So do add 8059A into your list of non-attendees.

We will now move on to our Plan B - an thorough, early reveal of our worlds robot + skills runs.

So do watch out for the videos

Did Dan Matz release a statement? If so, would you mind sharing it?

Also do you know about any other regions?

This may likely be a school decision. Dan Mantz has explicitly said they would make announcement in about two weeks.

I know our school district is getting a list of all out of state field trips so they can make an informed decision on a case by case. Our region has seen confirmed cases of the virus brought back from Italy trips.

I am sorry to hear 8059 will not be attending.

I’m sorry to hear that Singapore will not be competing this year in worlds. Even though I won’t be attending, I am saddened to hear this. It always gives a smile on my face to see your teams’ reveals and see them compete at worlds.
P.S I’m super exited to see those worlds reveals (no rush tho).

@lacsap said it rightly.
this has nothing got to do with recf or dan mantz decisions or statements.

in fact, it is even beyond my school’s decision - it is a decision from the Ministry of Education (Singapore). All outbound overseas school trips to be cancelled._

Edit:i am very disappointed actually… it represents one year worth of effort from the students. PLus… i was actually hoping to take a look at the new category - drone competition_
