Why all teams put zip ties on the motors?

I have been seeing that a lot of people use zip ties on their motors, and I don’t know exactly their purpose. :face_with_monocle:

For quick swapping motors.

They take the screws out and use the zip ties to hold it together. If you have a motor fail or want to swap hot motors for back to back matches you cut the ties and can zip tie new ones in.

Good hotswap motors will not require you to cut the zipties and instead just slide on and off. This can also be done with rubberbands.

Do note - use at your risk - I have seen multiple teams lose critical functionality at a match because their motors fell off (zip ties and rubber band failure).

Not having exposed motors helps a lot with this

Thank you all very much for all the comments, today I tested the system and I honestly liked it a lot. At the moment I think it’s pretty safe and I’m not too worried about the engine going out in the middle of a game.

be very afraid… hopefully, it was not your blue cartridge rolling around the field today.

Had a zip tie hot swap motor failure - blue cartridge went flying out at beginning of match, all robot could do is push things around.

It does happen.

If motors are overheating, it’s much more recommended to find out why and fix that problem.

As far as motors actually failing in a match… that’s usually due to static buildup. There are threads on this. I’ve made at least one myself. This is mitigated by 1) build techniques 2) electrical choke devices around motor wires.

Is that even legal these days ?

Last time I read the rules… teams were allowed a wide amount of discretion in items specifically for protecting electrical/electronics/wires on the bot. (ie: tape, flex conduit, etc) It could be strongly argued that a choke protects any/all of these against damage.

There was more chatter regarding them but I don’t recall the particular thread.

Rubber bands can also be used on the wires to prevent them falling out
