Hopefully we don’t get the same type of ladder vex used last time lol. I wasn’t a competitor but from what I heard they were half impossible to transport
Don’t even joke about a thing like that.
Most autonomous routines last less than even 10 secs. on average, so it’ll wouldn’t be that useful anyway.
I just want a parking bonus that actually takes some well designed mechanism to accomplish
I hope they bring the autonomous line back next year. I hate how a bad team can just drive straight into another robot, and ruin their auton.
What about a game where there are ladders that you have to assemble, then climb up for extra points. The ladder sections would connect similarly to skyrise sections.
I like defensive auton, but I want it to require more precision and skill than the offense takes. Starstruck had an interesting mix for auton.
Just an idea, but I think some sort of sorting game would be really cool.
There could be pyramids, cubes, and balls, all of which come in different colors. Around the field, there are 12 buckets:6 for each alliance. Each bucket will be labeled by color or shape. The shape buckets will be elevated and stationary while the color buckets will be on the ground and can be moved around. A fully uniform bucket can get extra points, but robots can play defense and dump different color or shape objects in the opposing teams buckets. There could be a possession limit for each object too.
That is just a possible idea of a game that could utilize the idea of sorting, and obviously there may be some flaws. But i just made it to demonstrate what a sorting game could be like in a game.
What if Vex added electronics into their fields? Like a button that you have to press, and if you press it for at least 3 seconds you get points?
Lets not turn this into FIRST
Imagine how often the field control system has issues. Now imagine that possibility multiplied by 3 or 4 or however many of these electronic things you want. I understand the idea, but mechanical game elements are just so much better right now.
Only FRC has such elaborate systems, last I checked. (Been a few years since FTC, Vex’s counterpart, has had integrated electronics)
Plus, that would add to venue requirements, lead to the inevitable malfunction and ensuing team and EP complaints, and heighten the cost of a field significantly.
I don’t think adding additional electronics would be a good idea.
Edit: sniped!
Actually, since EPs have been moving over to Raspberry Pis running the fields, there is now opportunities to explore new ideas with electronic control. RPi are pretty robust, issues we have faced have largely been due to broken cables at the driver station.
Some ideas of using electronics a little differently, could include having autonomous mode appear in the middle of the match - so mapping of the field would be really important. You could do this for VRC HS and VEX U to make it a little more challenging ![]()
@lacsap Last year this was brought up in open forum discussion at worlds, and the response Drow gave was clear: when more than 10% of Vex teams actually HAVE an autonomous, they are excited to change the auton time to longer. But for now, they’re just wanting to get teams to actually program something for autonomous mode
Our region over half MS teams have an autonomous.
So, I’m guessing maybe time to consider raising the bar a little higher…
If the REC released a RPi recommendation with backup battery and plugouts for a new field interface, we could pull off some electronic scoring elements. We already use electronic start/stop and it still has some problems here and there until we move to Bluetooth, which should be a bit smoother. Problem is mostly with setup and durability more than technicality. Setting up a field is already exhausting, and by the end of the season there are tons of broken field elements. With these stronger motors, we are going to see even more busted and bent M3 bolts holding field elements together. I would love to see more possibilities involving scoring, but only if they are simple to set up and robust enough to survive a whole season of competition and practice.
Maybe, if they made it longer and worth more, teams would do it?
Now, if they made a self contained electronic scoring element, it might work. Instead of having it interface with the computer, the scorekeepers simply recorded the value displayed on its screen. For example: a switch that started in the middle but if you switched to your side, it started counting points for you, and if your opponents switched it back, it started counting up points for them.
However, @Sylvie is right. Lets keep our game less contrived and more like a sport than a recycling/forklift/steampunk simulator. Stuff like SS, Turning Point, and Toss Up were great for this.
That being said FRC’s Aerial Assault was dope.
Saddly @action000 don’t think people will bother with autonomous
