2019 NorCal RI3D Reveal

Can you make a bot which can deploy a second bot which is tethered? then you can have duo drivers :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yes, that’s what we have in this robot. The two bases are tethered with the intent that they can be controlled in parallel by a pair of drivers.

Just to make sure Norcal is your team right? How far can they get apart from each other? Does it risk entanglment of the wires?

Outside of the V5 competition super kit how much did this cost you extra? Furthurmore do you recommend getting the booster kit or the advanced mechatronics kit?

Yeah, I’m Jaiveer and I was one of the people working on this RI3D. Currently the bots are limited by an 8ft tether, but a V2 would likely have a 16ft tether. Regarding entanglement, we used rope and wire loom due to time constraints and perhaps an underestimate of the risk therein. In a redone version, we would do it like Master & Puppet by OYES, with lexan sections that lie much flatter against the mat and are practically impossible to lift up.

We were very grateful to the 315 garage for letting us play with a lot of parts, along with plenty of steel from 22095. We bought only a few specific parts like the VEX wire stocks for the tether. I’m not sure how much this would cost to build from scratch if you don’t have parts already - I’ll put an estimate at maybe $500?

I also think you should virtually never buy a kit of parts, since the kits include way too many parts that you won’t need. Instead, buy those specific pieces that you need individually.

I’m really excited to see the video. But youtube just dosen’t work in China. Vpn’s cannot be downloaded either. Would you mind sending it into this thread by downloading it through streamable?

Sure, here’s the youtube video from post #1 hosted on Streamable: https://streamable.com/fwgsx

(This was surprisingly easy to do - I expected to have to download the video from YT and then reupload it but turns out you can just paste a youtube link into the website, cool!)

I’m really sorry to consume your time. But streamable also doesn’t work in China. Can you download it and then post it? Thanks.

Does Tor work?

Question- did you guys ever do voltage drop tests to see how much voltage would be lost from one base to another with a given amount of wire? Otherwise, did you notice that the base away from the brain was significantly weaker in any way?

Are you sure that robots are unable to drive over the wall? On some robots last year in Turning Point, there was a mechanism which could push the robot, in that case, up onto the platform. I feel like that could be used, or mounted specifically against a wall bot, negating the wall by driving over it.

When we had a longer, 25 foot tether, we noticed a significant heating up of the microcontroller, to the point that it was uncomfortable to touch. As a result of that, we were overly cautious and cut our tether to 8 feet, where we did not notice any heating up or power loss.

However, we think a tether in the 12 to 16 foot range could be viable, offering more flexibility and movement with minimal power loss. We could not do this in the RI3D due to time constraints (we wanted to make sure we had a working robot), but would test out various tether lengths if we were making a second version.

A robot that used a mechanism like the direct-to-center climbers last year would need to tilt the weight of their stacked cubes as well as that of their own robot, which would be an unstable, slow maneuver (due to the height of stacks etc). Even if they managed to create a mechanism to do so (which I am sure teams could), we still have 2 defensive robots playing one-on-one defense on each opponent. This would ensure that we would constantly be pushing them if they tried to get near the wall, disallowing them from even attempting to climb.

One of the most important reasons why we made tethered robots is to play constant defense on both opponents for the entire match.

What if you drop armored V5 brain and battery unit in the middle of the field and then have two mobile bases on 8 foot tethers?

Great robot!

I never imagine you could pack so much stuff in 18" cube.

We actually did think about that! However, we decided against it because we were not even sure that an 8 foot tether would work (given some of the issues we have had with V5) so wanted to ensure that at least one part of the robot would work for sure in the event of a tether failure. However, if we built this again, we would prototype a central microcontroller unit along with longer tethers with the original tether design.

I don’t think that much eletricity would be lost within a few feet. Maybe over hundreds of miles. but Vex is no where close to that scale.

Oooh, and the central unit would put up a mast and cap that covers a tower!

I fear no man.
But that thing…
It scares me
