It looks like in the rules a ‘concave’ portion to control the robot is considered in possession, so I wonder what a V shaped scoop, or flat with some edges would be viewed as?
I suppose it has to do with the uneveness inside the plastic filling? It’s also definitely not the shape mentioned above (there are 100% orientations with lower height than the usual one)
Getting over that barrier will be quite tricky… a fast (holonomic?) drive on the other side will easily block anyone trying to go over.
I like what you have, but I wanted to add on to what you said about launching triballs into the goals:
I was watching the middle school Worlds finals, and I watched it until the end, and they answered some questions that teams had.
Anyways, my point is that they mentioned that shooting into the goals are going to be near impossible due to the shape of the goal and how low it is. Also, if it hit the top of the goal, it would most likely rebound back.
So yeah, I wouldn’t count on it. At least from what I understood.
I do not think that X-drives or mechanums will be any use this year to be honest. I think that most people will just have straight drives.
If the triball will change direction when the robot changes direction, it is possession.
I’d guess flex of the goal and compression of the foam.
The slightly low height likely exists to make tri-balls tend to stay inside the goal once scored. When teams are stuffing the goal to the max, having the back balls not squirt out will be a positive.
The low goal will also prevent balls from rolling in from a long launch – which forces teamwork or crossing from one scoring zone to the other.
I’ve noticed that the center bar is 2.88 inches tall, leading me to question how viable it is to drive over it with with 4 inch wheels or even the 5 inch traction wheels. You might be able to accomplish it with the 6 inch wheel legs, but I doubt that those would work well for driving for the rest of the match.
I saw that on 0.25x speed (I always watch on 0.25x speed, okay) and my understanding is that there is foam. I will work out the physics fully later today, but it seems that it will only fit in if it is sliding perfectly along the ground. There is another route to getting to the goal, through the side, which allows launching and cannot be blocked by the opposing alliance.
Probably blow molded, which is usually pretty even.
Will find out tomorrow/Monday, which is when our field arrives.

I stumbled into this quandary back in 2019 when trying to understand the design for a potential solution the infamous and elusive “not ball” ball problem.

And truly, all parties involved in my aforementioned hypothetical scholarly discussion would have been found with egg on their face. As they were both incorrect!
The tri balls would’ve truly been considered a Spheroform with Tetrahedral Symmetry!
Assuming the individuals locked into this geometrical debate would be open minded enough to admit their ignorances and take this as a learning opportunity, that actually sounds like a party I would enjoy being at.

Do you think many teams will use a version of tank treads to climb over the middle barrier?
Unlikely, as tank treads have the problem of slipping off of their idler wheels and being unstable at high speeds. I think several newer teams will try, but they probably will switch quickly, because unlike a wheeled drivetrain, if you loose a tread, it’s over.
I was experimenting with a rocker bogey mech, and suspect other teams will too, but there is likely a simpler solution that I’m just not seeing yet hat will become the meta. Going over is such a speed advantage that it is probable that there will be multiple good solutions, such as simply adding to the frame’s height, or even adding suspension on sprung linear slides.
What stops teams from building an over bot and under bot that share R1’s subsystems 1 & 2, but swap subsystem 3 between matches? A team would discuss with their alliance partner before the match to figure out what configuration to use.
Are we thinking it is going to be a six-wheel meta?
would a x lift with a extendable claw work to elevate your robot up the pole at the end of the game. I geuss what I am asking is would a x lift be able to pull the entire robot up?
are you allowed to have a deployable sheild on your robot so when the match starts you deploy it in front of the enemy teams goal so they cannot score?

It’s not learning the hard way, it’s learning the best way. Note that this is different from asking for input about ideas. It’s simply more fun to test them yourself sometimes. And trust me, you learn a lot really fast.
As for your specific idea, it depends a lot on variables. How much will your robot weigh? How much torque is on your arm? What the heck is an X lift (assuming you mean scissor but never heard it called that before)?

I think you would be able to block the goal. From my understanding, the game manuel doesn’t say anything that would mean you cant block the goal. However, it is is possible that this could be associated with violating SG8.
