Double acting cylinders are constant force throughout their stroke if the air pressure is constant. (single acting cylinders have a negligible difference in their stroke due to the return spring). To maintain constant air pressure on a VEX pneumatic system, you will need to use the regulator and set it to a lower pressure, for example 50 psi, for the operation of your system (you will, of course, get less force from your air cylinders, about 6 lbs for 50 psi). You will then have “constant force” operation of the air cylinders at 50 psi until the air tank’s pressure drops below 50psi.
Using the regulator to reduce the pressure to the minimum needed for operation of you mechanism will, of course, give you more actuations of your pneumatic cylinders. You don’t always need to be running at 100 psi…
what did you guys do in order to control the force when the mobile goal comes down? our issue is that when we let go of our mobile goal and reach the passive extension state the force of it dropping down causes it to get 2 rings out of the stem. Is there a way I can slow the extension with it being passive?
I think this can be applicable in VEXU as there’s no limit to the tanks. You can have enough air stored to make it nearly constant for the entirety of a match
In the video we used a limiter to make the cylinder drop slower, but we took it off because it was too slow and now we deal with the effects of slamming
Our solution is just do a wheelie to tip backwards before setting down the goal, it’s surprisingly very consistent (granted we have a six motor 257rpm drive so results may vary)
