Ok, so I think the main issue with allowing 3D printed parts isn’t that people can’t get a 3d printer, it’s that the quality of printers will range greatly, you’ll have some teams shedding parts every match while others have bot’s that are stronger then their aluminium counter parts, plus different printers will have different accuracies so while one team can print 7" parts on their small cheap printer others will be 3D printing entire bots like USC but in high school. It isn’t that people don’t have printers that’s the issue, the issue is the radical difference in printer quality

are you implying that they would have a higher quality material? surely, similar to the plastics, they would limit it to specific plastics.

yes but this is very hard to do with filament, you can get filament that is ABS but with a wire of steel running through the middle, you can’t tell the difference but it’s there. and trying to tell the difference between ABS and polycarb fillament is impossible but polycarb fillament is 5x more expensive and way more durable than even aluminium

Being able to 3d print parts is not such an incredible advantage that it is necessary to be competitive. It is a rewarding learning experience that is important in the engineering field. Something that can be accomplished with 3d printing can be accomplished other ways.

Imo, if you want to CNC and 3D print, play up to VAIC or VEXU

…Or you could introduce it into vrc, because both machines have active real world use outside of the competition. I don’t even understand what your obsession with banning cnc is, it’s the same as implying that it should be illegal to cut metal cause some teams don’t have access to sharp tools and cant cut them.

I’d argue it is a big advantage, if you look at USC’s TP bots they where both fully 3D printed where as the other bots in Cali weren’t and they went undefeated until worlds, where they lost one match to a code error and one to a snapped chain. Compare this to the year before where they weren’t allowed to 3D print and had the same team members but did way worse and it’s clear 3D printing allowed them to drastically improve in a very short time span, now think of what would happen if a rich private school team with a 3D bot went against a normal team with a normal bot, idk what should happen and it doesn’t effect me now cuz I’m in vexU but I feel like 3D printing should not be allowed, or maybe at least restrict the amount it can be used.
Also stop complaining about CNC’ing, it’s cool and if you really want to you can order parts online, that’s my take at least

I could cut straight lines in c channel with scissors if I cared to. You don’t need a hundred dollars to cut a c channel. You do for machining lexan.

You’re not allowed to play up to VEXU, and VAIC is so new that many teams(like my own) cannot or will not compete. VEXU specifically clarifies that playing up is not allowed, even if the student is enrolled in a post-secondary school. If I could play up to VEXU, I most likely would. I don’t think that them being allowed to use a CNC machine or 3D print is a justifiable way to limit our use of these important technologies.

Yes you are. You just can’t be on a VEXU drive team until college. @Unionjackjz did VEXU her senior year.

I don’t think any of us who want 3D printing to be allowed want it to be unrestricted. As I said earlier, it could be limited by material, weight, or volume. This is similar to how vex already limits the use of CNCed lexan.

While USC took advantage of the ability to 3d print they did not have the most efficient robots in the world. teams were equally and more competitive that used much less 3d printed parts. Also, vexu regional events aren’t the most competitive especially compared to worlds.
