Answered: Different Lexan Thicknesses

Hello Karthik,

I’m relatively sure I saw this same question last season, however I couldn’t find it and wanted to double check.

Can a team use different thicknesses of Lexan on their robot, as long as both are under .070" and they don’t exceed the 12"x24" limit?

For example, they could use a 12"x12" sheet of .040" and a 12"x12" of .0625". This would give the same effect of sanding or filling it down as mentioned here (https://vexforum.com/t/answered-renamed-lexan-usage/26861/1) but without the hassle of trying to evenly sand down such a large peice. Although it wouldn’t technically be from the same sheet, it could obviously be produced from a single, VRC legal sheet of Lexan. (The scratches would also be crude and make robots less aesthetically pleasing, making those of us that enjoy pretty robots very sad…:()

I’d also mention that thinner sheets are better for some situations requiring flexibility and lightness, while thicker Lexan can provide strength and rigidity. A team can easily find themselves desiring both attributes in their robot design and would be inconvenienced by having to shave down large portions of their Lexan. Its not a limitation, just a painful and unnecessary inconvenience.

Thanks!

Yes, you may use different thicknesses of Lexan that are less than 0.070" thick, provided that all pieces together can be reassembled into an area less than 12"x24"

Yes, this would be legal.
