Answered: Resetting A Robot During A Match

As a referee, I would like some clarification on the rules when a driver is resetting a robot back into the starting position during a match. The rule in question is <G15>. It does specify that any rings in possession must be removed and taken out of play, but it doesn’t mention anything about rings that are in the starting position. In the rules for Programming Skills, <PSC1> specifies that any rings in the starting position need to be taken out of play.

Am I correct in assuming that during the team challenge event, the rings in the starting positions can remain in play when a team is resetting their robot?

If so, does this mean that it is alright for the driver to push aside any rings in the starting position to reset their robot?

Also, does this mean that removing rings from the starting position only applies to the programming skills challenge?

Thank you for your help.

**<G15> **If a Robot goes completely out-of-bounds (outside the playing field), gets stuck, tips over, or otherwise requires assistance, the Drivers may retrieve & reset the Robot. In the process they must:

  1. Signal the Referee by placing their VEX IQ Controller on the ground.
  2. Move the Robot to a Starting Position.
  3. Any Rings in possession of the Robot while being handled must be removed from the Robot and taken out of play for the remainder of the Match.
This rule is intended so teams can fix damaged Robots or help get their Robots “out of trouble.” It is not intended for Teams to use as part of a strategy to gain an advantage during a Match. If a Head Referee sees Teams strategically exploiting this rule, they may be Disqualified from said Match.

These interpretations are correct, provided that the Rings are not moved into a Scored position (e.g. in the Floor Goal), and are not moved as part of a strategy to gain an advantage (e.g. neatly lined up in front of the Robot that has been reset).
